Former San Antonio Officer Fired Over Feces Sandwich Incident Now Leads Another Texas Police Department
A former San Antonio police officer who was terminated — not once, but twice — over a shocking incident in which he allegedly fed a homeless man a sandwich filled with dog feces has been appointed police chief of a small Texas town.

Matthew Luckhurst was elevated to the top cop position in Benavides, a community of roughly 1,100 residents located approximately 150 miles south of San Antonio. The promotion came three years after the Benavides department brought him on board despite the notorious controversy trailing his career, according to city records and local reports.
Luckhurst officially assumed the chief’s role on June 1, following a city council vote on April 30 to appoint him as the department’s leader, the San Antonio Current reported. He will earn $28 per hour in the position, council records show. Benavides officials did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.
The original incident dates back to 2016, when Luckhurst — then a five-year veteran of the San Antonio force — had his badge revoked after a fellow officer reported that he had placed feces from the street between slices of bread in a Styrofoam container and left it beside a sleeping homeless man. The man did not consume the sandwich.
Luckhurst has maintained his innocence from the start, claiming he gave the contaminated sandwich to the man to throw away, not to eat.
That same year brought another disturbing allegation: Luckhurst was accused of defecating in a women’s restroom at the San Antonio Police Department and smearing a “brown substance” on a toilet seat. He reportedly never denied responsibility for that incident.
His legal battle dragged on for years. Luckhurst successfully appealed his 2016 firing in 2019 and briefly rejoined the San Antonio force, but a judge ultimately upheld his dismissal in 2020.
By February 2022, Luckhurst was back in uniform in the nearby town of Floresville, where he served for 10 months before being terminated once his notorious past came to light.
In 2023, then-Benavides Police Chief Andrew Hines hired Luckhurst, declaring that the appointment “reflects the department’s commitment to honesty and accountability.” Now, just three years later, Luckhurst has risen from officer to chief in the same department.
